Elafonisos is a small island off the southeastern end of the Peloponnese peninsula, part of the department of Laconia. The small town of Neapoli is located to its east.
During ancient times, Elafonisos wasn’t even an island ― it was a peninsula, part of which later became submerged.
The island’s name, which translates to “island of the deer” in Greek, originates from the large population of red deer that existed there in antiquity. A number of shrines dedicated to ancient Greek goddess of hunting, Artemis, could also be found on the island.
