New York Senator Charles Schumer thinks it’s the government’s job to regulate airline seat size, because somehow passenger comfort is now a pressing issue for Congress. Mr. Schumer is attaching an amendment to the FAA Reauthorization Bill to compel the FAA to set minimum seat size standards. It’s easy press to beat up the airlines — and I’m hardly an advocate for them — but the Senator’s idea is just plain silly. It’s also an idea that will lead to higher fares. I’m sure his constituents will appreciate that.
