Airline flight safety report card for 2020 goes backwards says IATA

The airline flight safety report card for 2020 has gone backwards according to a report just issued by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

While passenger flights decreased by 53 per cent in 2020 due to COVID-19 the accident rate jumped to 1.71 flights per million well up on the average of 1.38 per million over the past five years.

There were 38 accidents in 2020 compared to 52 in 2019 and the accident rate for IATA member airlines improved to one every 0.83 per million flights from one the five year average of 0.96.
